What is Tree Felling?
Felling is the process of downing individual trees. The person cutting the trees is a known as the feller. There are two main methods of tree felling, the first being hand felling. This is usually carried out with an axe, saw, or chainsaw. Felling is followed up by limbing and bucking in traditional applications. In the modern commercial logging industry, felling is typically followed by limbing and skidding. The second method is by using a ‘feller buncher‘ which is a motorised vehicle with an attachment which rapidly cuts and gathers several trees in the process of felling them.
In cut-to-length logging a harvester performs the tasks of a feller-buncher additionally doing the delimbing and bucking of the trees as well.
It is not uncommon for people to attempt to fell a tree without the skills or knowledge of the task they are carrying out. You may think that by doing it yourself you can avoid having to fork out money and also save yourself time contacting people and arranging a good date and time for the service. We would always advise that doing the task yourself is not the most efficient or safest option. There are many risks that can happen when tree felling is not carried out by someone who is highly trained and knows how to tackle the procedure with the correct equipment.
There are many things that we take into consideration when felling a tree:
Firstly, planning is key to successfully felling a tree. In preparation we will come and survey the tree and make a decision on which forestry equipment to bring. By doing this it creates a safer working session as well as making the post-felling work less hassle. We will consider if there are any obstacles and hazards such as overhead lines, roads or nearby properties. If necessary we will put out warning signs to ensure everyone is aware of the process taking place.
A very important thing to determine is the felling direction of the tree. This is gauged by our professional team carefully studying the tree. Some factors we will consider are – how do the branches grow and their appearance, which way the wind is blowing and how strong are the gusts. We will use a plumb line to test the tree’s natural direction of fall. When we have determined this we will clear everything in that area as well as clearing an area where we can move away when the tree is descending.
We will get rid of all the branches and twigs from ground to up to shoulder height. Once this is completed the felling cut can be made. When doing this, we will check two things: that the hinge has a uniform thickness and the right dimensions and that the felling wedge or breaking bar has been inserted before the tree can pinch the guide bar. The technique you use for making the cut is dependent on the tree size, slope, and on the size of the chainsaw.
There are a few felling tools to choose from when cutting the tree down. The tree size determines which type of equipment you need. For the smallest trees, you usually don’t need felling tools and can usually do it by hand, maybe with the help of a long pole. There is also a felling wedge which provides greater force than the other types of breaking bars. If the tree is extremely large and strong then a rope and a winch is often the safest and most forceful way to fell a tree.
